How To Maintain Acne Prone Skin

By Amanda Kirby

Acne is not confined to teenagers and puberty, but it also prevalent in adults and in women mostly during pregnancy. As you may know, acne manifests itself in the form of pimples, and would break out generally in the face and back areas, in copious amounts at that. It is caused due to the over activity of the sebaceous glands or the oil producing glands. When it combines with dead skin cells, hormones and bacteria, the oily substances are trapped inside the pores and causes swelling. Be wary of how the lumps appear - they may have a white or black head, or worse, a tender red lump which should not be touched, all the more so popped. You expose yourself to the risk of scarring by ignoring acne. Some forms of acne are so deleterious that their presence within the skin creates nodules and cysts, which results in permanent scarring in most cases. Acne can be caused due to stress, fatigue, and cosmetics and even due to humidity, although nothing has been proved till date.

How you should - and should not handle acne prone skin

Professional treatment is the best for acne, and the earlier the treatment is provided the better. A good doctor will be in a position to treat acne-using medications by controlling the over-active sebaceous glands, hormonal imbalance, or even stress.

To avoid permanent, debilitating scarring or, at the very least swelling or the spread of acne infection, you will want to avoid scratching, squeezing or breaking your pimples at all costs.

Of course you would not want to apply oily cosmetics on acne prone skin, because acne, after all, is caused by oil buildup among other things. Instead of using oily cosmetics, it is better to go for water based ones, which might be less harsh. And before going to bed, avoid any chance of skin irritation by removing makeup thoroughly instead of leaving it on.

The acne prone skin should be pampered with gentle wash and pat dry. By scrubbing too hard on the acne, you risk further worsening the condition and the pores may further be blocked as a result of such dodgy technique.

When cleaning the hair, it is best to shampoo it regularly and avoid the use of oily substances such as gel and/or pomade - this is especially effective against forehead pimples.

Do use non comedogenic cosmetics in order to reduce side effects. Acne has the tendency of making the skin even more sensitive, thus the added possibility of sunburn. Avoid opportunities to get a tan, and definitely do use sunscreen on your skin. Acne can be palliated with the topical application of over-the-counter medicine with salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide.
