Oral health in Sheffield

By Alex J. Cunningham

Although the system is not yet perfect, oral health is very important to the people who care about oral health. Working directly with the government is Sheffield City Council who aims to deliver new initiatives to encourage the citizens of Sheffield to take greater care of their teeth.

It has been revealed by NHS Sheffield that 41% of children aged between five and 12 in the area have experienced dental caries such as tooth decay and cavities. They also calculated that the cost of treating oral disease in both adults and children in Sheffield costs them 42 million every year, both figures the NHS plan on reducing dramatically over the next few years.

In 2008, NHS Sheffield revealed their Oral Health Promotion Strategy 2009-2012 which had two main objectives. The first is to develop a community fluoride programme and the second to develop new care pathways for specialist dental services. Focusing on preventative care, the NHS Sheffield want to reduce the levels of caries in the under 12s, and to also reduce the level of mouth cancer in adults, both caused by poor dental health.

They are also concerned that some areas of Sheffield do not have the same level of access to dental services as others, another aspect NHS Sheffield plan to resolve. Darnall and Manor will have their dental services increased and they will also investing more money in improving oral health messages in the community and into creating new care pathways for patients who suffer from dental anxiety.

Finally, Sheffield is home to one of the UK's top dental schools; The School of Clinical Dentistry at The University of Sheffield. Innovators in both training and clinical research (their team carries out world-leading person-centred, bioscience and bioengineering research) The University of Sheffield has undergraduate, postgraduate and CPD courses, as well as ADOPT; an initiative that offers year 12 pupils interested in a career in dentistry to get hands on experience to support their future career.
