Treatment of Asthma: Effective Ways to Get the Life You Always Wanted

By King Franco

Asthma is a health condition that needs the best treatment so that people who have this disease can have a chance to live happy and normal lives. Several factors can lead to the development of asthma and these must be avoided to prevent complications. Also, another way to control asthma is by taking the right drugs. Asthma treatment involves preventive and management techniques which needs long-term and short-term medications. The symptoms felt, the patient's age, and the factors that trigger asthma must be considered in choosing the right set of medications. The development of asthma may vary in different individuals so the treatment may not be the same as well. If asthma worsens, it may require a high dosage or a stronger type of medication to keep it under control.

Long-term control medications are usually given to ease inflammation which can lead to appearance of symptoms while quick-relief medications are for immediate relief that will last long. Inhaled corticosteroids such as fluticasone and budesonide are long-term medications that show low probability of having side effects. Leukotriene modifiers like montelucast and zileuton are found to be related to psychological reactions like aggression and thoughts of suicide. Long-term medications for asthma treatment include long-acting beta agonist like salmeterol and formoterol. These are commonly for severe asthma attacks and are specifically given with inhaled corticosteroids. Theophylline is another asthma treatment medication that keeps airways open and at the same time relaxes airway muscles. Fluticasone and salmeterol mixture are also known as an example of combination inhalers that are also useful asthma treatment medications.

Short-term beta agonists belong to the quick-relief medication group which are known to take effect right away but last for many hours. Oral and intravenous corticosteroids also fall in this category which lessens inflammation caused by severe asthma episodes. Atrovent is another quick-relief asthma treatment that relaxes the muscles around the airways during an attack.

One thing that sets off asthma is exposure to allergens and allergy shots are given when this happens as part of an effective asthma treatment. These are also termed as immunotherapy injections and acts by decreasing the reaction level of the patient's immune system. Omalizumab is known to alter the immune system and it is given to those who have allergies and severe asthma. Other allergy medication involve in asthma treatment comprise of oral and nasal spray antihistamines and decongestants, cromolyn and ipratropium sprays, and corticosteroids.

Self-care is also an essential part in asthma treatment. This may include trying hard to avoid asthma triggers, keeping asthma diary, developing asthma action plan, using natural asthma therapies to boost relaxation and checking your peak flow on daily basis. The asthma diary assists the sufferer to keep track of their asthma progress monitoring symptoms and treatment and the triggers of the asthma.

A normal and happy life is still possible even for someone with asthma as long as he keeps track of the progression of his disease. A clean environment will be good for children with asthma. Asthma may be fatal so it should be monitored regularly.
