There are countless drugs in the world today that wreak havoc on user's bodies. There are new concoctions emerging every day that combine two or more drugs to create the next "high", each seems to do more damage than the last. There are drugs that can stop your heart immediately to those that will cause the flesh to literally rot off the bone. One of these flesh rotting drugs is a drug known as designer drug krocodil. Its use is mostly restricted to Russia; however its prevalence is growing into the world's first drug epidemic.
Krocodil
Krocodil, also known as desomorphine, which belongs to the morphine family, gets its name due to the gangrene it causes at the injection point. It causes the flesh to rot, creating a scaly, green effect, similar to a crocodile, which is where it derives its name from. It is referred to as a poor man's drug, due to the accessibility of the ingredients and the cheap price to produce it.
Poor Man's Drug
Krocodil's high mimics that of heroin, at a fraction of the price. On the European market heroin goes for about fifty to eighty US dollars a dose. Krocodil, which is made from an over the counter headache medicine, codeine, can be purchased for about four US dollars, and the cost of household ingredients. Codeine is the main ingredient, however it is cooked with household items such as gasoline, paint thinner, hydrochloric acid, and iodine. Red phosphorous is also included in the concoction; this is obtained by scraping the striking pad on matchboxes. It takes roughly an hour to cook the drug, and the high only lasts about an hour to an hour and a half, so it is an all day affair to remain high. Due to the high it produces, the low cost, and accessibility of ingredients, Russia is now seeing the world's first drug epidemic.
Effects
The effects of Krocodil are straight out of a horror movie. It literally causes the flesh to rot off the bone like a walking un-dead zombie. An addiction to Krocodil, as is the case with most drugs, lethal, however it is a much faster and more painful death in comparison. It is reported that withdrawal from Krocodil also lasts much longer than the average withdrawal time. Rarely do users survive after two years of use. In addition to rotting flesh the drug also causes brain damage leading to motor skill dysfunction and speech impediments. Blood poisoning is common among those who inject Krocodil.
Russia
Krocodil is mostly used in Russia, spreading rampant throughout the country, creating the world's first drug epidemic. Northern Russia features eight month winters and high rates of unemployment. This may have lead to the spread of drug use. Boredom and depression are often leading causes of drug use, especially among young people. Worse, Russians don't have easy access to drug addiction rehab programs. There are only about 500 centers and they are mostly managed by private religious organizations. This can make recovery impossible for many.
